This place is unbelieveable but real as real gets.. wild horses, dolphins, manatees, birds, and even a huge castle.. all in a small little island with the St. Mary's river on one side, the cleanest blue ocean with a killer reef on another side and springs and waterfalls and so much more to see... The horses are near the castle and this is right off of 95 right as you cross from Florida into GA.  Take exit #1 in Georgia and follow the signs to St. Mary's from there follow the signs to the Cumberland Island Ferry, right next to it is a six lane ramp with tons of parking all the way down.

Once you launch head east around the bend or just follow the ferry for the first time..

The gift shops across from the ferry have killer natical maps of the area for $7.00.

Watch the tides it gets really shallow near the dock..

There are sharks all the way inland and the inlet has some pretty serious shallows too.. you need to be right next to the markers to be safe over there.

The nautical map will show the depths in the area.. there are two docks once you reach the island (about a 15 minute ride from the launch ramp) the first one is closest to the museum, the castle "dungenous" and the wild horses can generally be found all around the castle.  You will not be able to miss them.. on the beach side/ocean side there are ususally always a small school of dolphins and a couple of sharks there.
Much more to see!!   Worth the ride and the drive!  If you scuba, Gray's reef is one of the most amazing marine santuaries anywhere.. just about 7 miles north of the island.

We went in October, weather was a little cold but the area is beautiful and there is a Hampton Inn with a launch right across the street.  Cumberland Island is very cool and first timers should take the tour and learn the history as it is very interesting.  I am looking forward to going back.  We rode all the way to Mayport and had lunch at a great place near there (water accessible).
